Montana Delegates Fight Back
Congressional delegates of the state of Montana are fighting back against the federal government, which recently released a memo that makes it illegal for a medical marijuana prescription holder to buy a gun or ammunition.
Among those that spoke out in defense of marijuana patients is Senator Jon Tester, who claimed the memo is a “misguided effort.” We must ask, an effort to do what?
Is the federal government hoping that patients will decide they want guns more than they want medicine, and then turn against the cause? Or are they simply using gun rights to make a statement: that federal law is still against medical marijuana?
But these questions only lead to more questions, as Washington, D.C. voters recently passed legislation in support of medical marijuana. If those citizens are governed by federal law, then maybe the federal government should consider paying a little more attention to what's going on at home.
Despite the aggressive and unreasonable nature of the memo, Montana representatives will not back down. Max Baucaus and Denny Rehberg, a Senator and Representative, respectively, have publicly said that they will stand in defense of gun rights, even in the case of medical marijuana patients.
Montana is not the only place where people are outraged. Marijuana supporters across the country are speaking out against this new regulation, and many are waiting for the government to give a response as to how this is reasonable.
One voice that hasn't been heard yet, however, is that of the NRA, or National Rifle Association. Despite their devotion to gun rights, they have not yet been willing to speak in support of marijuana prescription holders. Many think this is due to the controversial nature of the topic.
There are sure to be more people speaking up as time goes on, and hopefully the majority of them will see the ridiculousness of the ATF memo.
