Maine Medical Marijuana Facility receives OK to proceed

A vacant building along Route 111 in Biddeford, Maine will soon have new life--not only in the form of a new occupant, but also with Medical Marijuana flowering inside.

The Biddeford City Council gave the "go ahead" for Safe Harbor Maine, Inc--an not for profit company--to open a dispensary and grow center along Route 111. Maine Medical Marijuana laws require dispensaries to grow their own medication, and allow dispensaries and grow centers to occupy the same space.

While the president of the owner does not believe many patrons will be walk-in customers at the new location, most residents in the area spoke in favor of establishing the center in Biddeford. Many politicians were also in support, looking forward to the increase in taxes Medical Marijuana has brought to many other states. Not surprisingly, the move does have some detractors who fear robberies and crime will increase with the arrival of the dispensary. Maine Medical Marijuana law hopes to minimize such crimes by requiring dispensaries and grow centers to be heavily fortified against unwanted intrusion--in addition to being well monitored and supervised.

Safe Harbor Maine's new location is set to open at the beginning of 2011.
